Online guitar lessons? We need to talk.
Mar 14, 2023Your time and money are valuable. You're probably only here if you're unsatisfied. So something's not working. The frustration is probably much greater if all along, you thought you were doing the right thing. Practicing the right stuff, pursuing the right information, following the right person's advice and being a good little student to a good authority figure you wanted to please.
The reason I understand is that I was you. To really bring the significance of that into focus, that is while I was living in Nashville, TN, studying, working gigs, getting my feet wet, and being told I was doing great.
I should add that the common advice of "to teach something is to really know it" didn't work for me either. I didn't start playing the guitar to become a teacher. I started playing guitar because in my school paper dated 1-4-95:
"When I grow up I want to be a guitar player. I want to have enough money to buy a huge amp called a Marshall Full Stack. I want to play [like] Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jimi Hendrix."
I took all the usual steps the same as you've probably been. So from your perspective and for your benefit, let's suspend all judgment, bias, and defense.
What do the pros (not professors) inherently do differently? When in school and for a few years afterwards, I used to think it can't be taught at all. But I was looking at it the way anyone who is any good at business would look at it:
Teachers have answers. Buy the lessons, content, and a degree. Don't question your teachers (even though the late great Ted Greene had said to in 1996 when I sat 4 feet away from him at a guitar workshop). Be a good kid, put everything in it's own little box, and most of all, restrain yourself. Don't do the thing you love if the teacher is telling you to do something different.
How often do pros do any of that? Not to mention legends. Where was Jeff Beck's degree from?
I'm not telling you to quit lessons, drop out of college, and become a contrarian jerk. That's not my point or intention at all. The only point is to accurately solve the problem of why you're on one more guitar website looking for information. So what do the pros do differently?
The answer is actually pretty simple: mentorships, proximity, and living it every day.
Fretboard Playground is the solution. I'll mentor you with monthly livestreams. You'll have proximity not only to anything I can show you, but to other members in the community area. Most importantly you'll have a reason for picking up the guitar every day with fresh material.
There is no dividing line between "This is just for pros" and "This is just for beginners." It's all the same because the process is identical. Where you wind up in that process is on you, but I'll give you the tools to do what you want with it either way.
I put my life on hold for five years to build it for you.
